Avoss Lake Cabin sits on the northern shore of a roughly 1.5-mile-long lake at about 800 feet elevation, tucked against a patch of muskeg and inlet stream on south-central Baranof Island, about 35 air miles southeast of Sitka. The A-frame cabin is reached only by floatplane roughly a 30 35 minute trip from Sitka, weather permitting and helicopter access is prohibited because the cabin lies inside the South Baranof Wilderness Area. The surrounding landscape is steep and rugged, threaded with small streams and channels and bright with wildflowers in spring and summer; brown bears are common, so trip planning should include bear-safety preparations. For those seeking quiet backcountry time, the site supports photography, hunting (deer and mountain goat in season) and some angling: Dolly Varden and rainbow trout turn up between July and September, though fishing is typically slow. If you want topo references or to plan routes, consult the USGS Port Alexander C-3 map and check hunting and fishing regulations with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game before you go. The cabin itself is a compact 16-by-16-foot A-frame with a sleeping loft reached by a vertical ladder and a lower level furnished with one double and one single plywood bunk (no mattresses), a table and chairs, a cooking counter and a broom; an outhouse is provided. Heat is from an oil stove, but fuel is not supplied plan on bringing #1 diesel (about 10 gallons for a 3-day stay is suggested, more or less depending on conditions) in FAA-approved containers or a jerry can secured in a non-tip box. Visitors must supply sleeping bags and pads, a cooking stove, cookware, lantern, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire starter and extinguisher, rain gear and boots; lake or inlet water must be treated before use and it's wise to bring some drinking water. A small, heavy square-bowed skiff with oars is available; a long-shaft outboard (2 10 hp) is recommended but not provided, and everyone using the boat should wear a Coast Guard-approved PFD and secure the skiff ashore (remove the plug) to prevent it filling with rain. The cabin is listed as a single site (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1; site type breakdown: 1 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites) and is open seasonally from early June through October. Make reservations carefully: only one change to a booking's start or end date is allowed after that you must cancel and rebook. Visitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety; come prepared for remote, self-reliant backcountry camping.
