Davidof Lake Cabin sits within the South Baranof Wilderness, about 40 air miles southeast of Sitka (roughly a 35-minute floatplane ride from town when weather allows). The single reservable site at this location is the 16-by-16-foot A-frame cabin it's the only campsite on site (total campsites: 1; site type breakdown: 1 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites) and is intended as a backcountry base rather than a fully equipped campground. The cabin sleeps eight, with a sleeping loft reached by a vertical ladder and two double plywood bunks on the main level (note: there are no mattresses). Basic furnishings include a wood stove for heat, an axe or splitting maul, a table and benches, a cooking counter, a broom and an outhouse toilet. Water can be drawn from Davidof Lake but must be treated; visitors are advised to bring drinking water if possible. A heavy square-bowed skiff with oars is provided a long-shaft outboard in the 2 10 hp range is recommended but not supplied and everyone using the boat should wear a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device. Tie the skiff well up on shore and pull the plug before you leave so it won't fill with rainwater. The setting is dense spruce and hemlock forest roughly 100 feet inside the lake's tree line, so the cabin itself does not have a view of the water; Davidof Lake is about 1.2 miles long, a half-mile wide, and sits at 650 feet elevation while surrounding peaks rise to snowfields above 2,000 feet. Blueberry and huckleberry bushes grow around the cabin and brown bears frequent the area, so food storage and bear-aware practices are essential. Recreational opportunities right from the cabin include berry picking, lake fishing (Dolly Varden are most reliably targeted mid-July through September and some rainbow trout are present), deer hunting, boating from the skiff, and landscape or wildlife photography. A 1.2-mile Davidof Lake Trail on the lake's southwest shore links to Plotnikof Lake and Cabin, but it is not maintained and can be difficult to locate; visitors should be prepared for route-finding. The cabin is open seasonally from early June through October, access is floatplane only (weather permitting), and guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements, safety, and for bringing essentials such as sleeping bags and pads, a camp stove, cookware, food, toilet paper, lantern, garbage bags, fire extinguisher and starter, rain gear, boots and PFDs. Reservation policy allows only one change to the start or end date of a booking; additional modifications require canceling and rebooking.
