“This cabin is in a spectacular location with a huge waterfall just over the lake. You may also get some cell service here (sometimes). There is a nice beach to park your floatplane. ”

Baranof Lake Cabin sits on the southwest edge of a greenish-blue, glacier-fed lake at about 145 feet elevation, with spruce and hemlock forest rising into 3,000-foot ridgelines on either side. The lake runs nearly three miles long and half a mile wide; the cabin faces the mouth of the Baranof River and a waterfall visible across the water, and there is a small sandy beach immediately in front of the cabin. Wildlife is an integral part of the experience brown bears frequent the area so attentive food storage and bear-aware practices are essential. Fishing draws anglers late July through late August when cutthroat, Dolly Varden and rainbow trout runs concentrate near inlet streams, but dense shoreline vegetation makes shoreline hiking and fishing along much of the lake impractical; boat access is the main way to move around and to reach better fishing spots. For map reference, the cabin appears on the USGS Sitka A-3 topo map. The 12' x 14' Pan Abode style cabin is the sole overnight site here (total campsites: 1) and is listed in the database as both an RV site and a tent site. It sleeps up to six on two double and two single plywood bunks and includes a wood stove, table with benches, cooking counter and cupboard, an axe or splitting maul, broom and an outhouse note the cabin does not provide mattresses, cooking utensils, fuel or potable water. A small, heavy square-bowed skiff with oars is supplied; bringing a long-shaft 2 10 hp outboard will greatly increase your mobility, and everyone in the skiff should wear a Coast Guard approved PFD. Water can be taken from the lake or a nearby stream but must be treated; visitors are advised to bring their own water, sleeping bags and pads, a cooking stove and cookware, toilet paper, garbage bags, a lantern, fire starter and rain gear and boots. Access is by floatplane from Sitka (about 25 minutes in clear weather; flights can double in time if weather forces a longer northern route), the cabin is generally available June through October, and reservation changes are limited only one modification to start or end date is allowed per reservation before you must cancel and rebook.
