“This is a magical place, I try to go every year on my birthday. Bring a head lamp the cabin is dark, fire starter, a chair, and your trout pole ! ”
“The cabin and the location are lovely, and all was clean with dryish wood available when we arrived. The stove needs new firebrick to reduce the amount of smoke it emits into the cabin, but other than that-- all is in great shape!”
“It was great, the cabin was stocked with dry firewood and some propane for the camp stove. ”

Salmon Lake Cabin sits on the east shore of a compact freshwater lake on Baranof Island, about 11 miles southeast of Sitka and roughly a 10-minute floatplane flight from town. The shelter itself is a 15' x 17' Pan Abode style wood cabin built in 1998 and maintained to sleep up to six people on two double and two single plywood bunks; this site is listed as a single campsite (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1) that functions as both an RV and tent site in the reservation system. Inside you'll find a wood stove, table with benches, a cooking counter, cupboard, broom, an axe or splitting maul and an outhouse toilet, but no mattresses or cooking utensils are provided guests must supply sleeping bags and pads, a cook stove, pots and pans, plates and utensils, toilet paper, garbage bags, a lantern and a fire extinguisher. A small, heavy square-bowed skiff with oars is available for use; a long-shaft 2 10 hp outboard motor improves mobility but is not supplied. A mooring buoy is located at the head of Silver Bay for boat anchorage (configured on a 4,200-lb concrete block with 90 feet of 7/8-inch chain), but reservation of the cabin does not convey exclusive use of the buoy and mariners are responsible for judging whether the mooring is suitable for their craft. Getting to the cabin requires planning: by boat from Sitka it's about 10 miles to Silver Bay, then a 2-mile walk along the Salmon Lake Redoubt Lake Trail to the cabin; by floatplane it's typically about 10 minutes. Plan arrivals and departures around local tide tables, unload at the east shore estuary head and then tie up to the buoy; Silver Bay can freeze from mid-November through mid-February. The lake is roughly 3/4 mile long by 1/4 mile wide and is framed by spruce and hemlock slopes rising to about 2,500 feet; brown bears are frequent, so store food securely and practice bear-aware habits. Recreational opportunities focus on fishing (good cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden in the lake; pink and sockeye salmon runs in the outlet from July to mid-August and coho from late August through September), hiking the 2-mile trail to Silver Bay, and seasonal deer hunting check the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for permits and seasons. Water should be treated before use and bringing your own is recommended; for navigation and trip planning refer to USGS Port Alexander D-4 and Sitka A-4 topographic maps. Note the reservation policy: only one change to the start or end date is allowed per reservation after that you must cancel and rebook to alter dates.
