Kellar A ★ 1 · Jul 2024Beautiful spot! Unfortunately the fuel line for stove was damaged by a bear, and water got in the system. It took us 5 hours to MacGyver a fix and clean the system. The skiff was missing, apparently swept away by an avalanche, so we were stuck at the cabin and couldn't go to the best fishing areas. Of course, unexpected things happen at remote sites in AK, but from a read of the cabin log both of these issues happened multiple times. I hope the FS can allocate some resources for the Plotnikof cabin to bearproof the fuel line and place the skiff out of the avalanche zone.

Plotnikof Lake Cabin sits on Baranof Island in the South Baranof Wilderness Area about 45 air miles southeast of Sitka, reachable only by floatplane (roughly a 40-minute flight from Sitka) and a short 100-foot walk from the landing. The small wood cabin is located 100 feet back from the north shore of a narrow, four-mile lake at about 275 feet elevation, tucked among large old-growth spruce and hemlock and shoulder-high brush heavy with berries. From the cabin you can see waterfalls tumbling off steep granite slopes that rise to snow-capped ridges; wildlife is part of the setting brown bears frequent the area, and anglers may find rainbow trout in Plotnikof Lake and its inlet, steelhead runs on the outlet stream in mid-May to early June, and coho salmon in late August through September. A rough, unmaintained 1.2-mile Davidof Lake Trail begins behind the cabin for those who want a short hike or want to reach Davidof Lake, and hunters willing to walk out from the cabin will find deer country in the surrounding backcountry. The site is a single Forest Service cabin reservation (total campsites: 1; site type listed as both RV and tent) that sleeps up to six in a 12 x 14-ft Pan-abode style structure with two double and two single plywood bunks, a table with benches, a cooking counter, an oil stove for heat and an outhouse. The cabin provides basic tools broom, axe or splitting maul an outdoor screened cooler box and a small skiff with oars, but does not supply heating oil, mattresses, or cooking utensils. Visitors must bring #1 diesel (roughly 10 gallons for a typical three-day stay, adjust by season), sleeping bags and pads, stoves, pots and utensils, food, toilet paper, lantern and fire starter, a fire extinguisher, PFDs for boat use and rain gear and boots for the terrain; water from the lake or inlet must be treated or you should bring your own. Firewood is not provided (gather only dead-and-down wood), and skiff users are advised to tie the boat well up on shore, pull the plug before leaving, and consider a 2 10 HP long-shaft outboard if they want to cover more water (motors are not provided). The cabin is generally available mid-June through October (accessible early June through October) and is a true backcountry stay visitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety. Note the reservation policy allows only one change to start or end dates per booking; additional changes require canceling and rebooking.
