“When we pulled in and set up as we prepared dinner we looked out of the window and a cow moose was standing in the creek grazing. Doesn't get much better than that!”
“Great campground with firewood available. Just a little too close to the road. Moose nearby. Beautiful stream.”
“The bathrooms are very clean and well lit. Love the new stands for cook stoves. We loved driving thru that area looking for wildlife and fall colors.”

Prune Creek Campground sits at about 7,700 feet along the Bighorn Scenic Byway (U.S. Highway 14) near Burgess Junction, roughly 26 miles southwest of Dayton, Wyoming. The site is set on the banks of the South Fork Tongue River beneath a lodgepole pine cover, with distant granite summits in the Bighorn range topping 13,000 feet. TOTAL CAMPSITES: 20, and each of those sites accommodates both RVs and tents; every site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill. Basic amenities on site are accessible vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection, and firewood bundles are available from the campground host. Two non-towed vehicles are allowed per site the first vehicle is included in the base fee, and a second vehicle is charged $10 per day at the campground. Reservations and refunds are handled through recreation.gov; refund requests processed there incur a $10 cancellation-processing fee retained by the reservation contractor and the non-refundable reservation fee is not returned by the concessionaire. For local administration and questions about availability or conditions, contact Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds at gccampgrounds13@gmail.com. Recreation around Prune Creek is varied: the immediate area provides access to off-road vehicle trails and scenic jeep roads, plus hiking routes that range from creek-side loops to longer treks that lead toward the Cloud Peak Wilderness. Sibley Lake, nearby, is open only to non-motorized craft and has an accessible fishing dock where anglers target rainbow, brown and brook trout; canoeing and quiet boating are the focus there rather than motorized watercraft. Beyond fishing and hiking, the broader Bighorn National Forest supports auto touring, biking, horseback riding, hunting, winter sports and visitor-center programs, so Prune Creek works well as a base for both short outings and multi-day explorations. Shell Falls Visitor Center, with interpretive trails and viewpoints, lies about 23 miles to the southwest, and the Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark is roughly 28 miles away; Arrowhead Lodge, Bear Lodge and Elk View Inn in the corridor can supply off-road rentals, fishing gear and food if you need supplies or a warm meal after a day on the trails.
