About

Shell Creek Campground sits at about 7,500 feet along the banks of Shell Creek in the Bighorn Mountains, where granite peaks reach above 13,000 feet and stands of fir, aspen and cottonwood shade the creekside sites. You'll find it off U.S. Highway 14 roughly 32 miles east of Greybull, with a short spur up Paintrock Lakes Road (Forest Road 17) to the camping area; Shell Falls Visitor Center is about six miles to the west and the town of Shell and the Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite are within easy driving distance. The surrounding Bighorn National Forest opens up a wide range of outdoor options: creek and lake trout fishing right in the watershed, loop and mountain hikes (the nearby Adelaide Trail provides access to Shell Creek and trail connections toward the Cloud Peak Wilderness), horseback riding, and several scenic backcountry driving routes such as Battle Creek Road to Medicine Lodge Lake, Ranger Creek Road to Shell Reservoir, Hunt Mountain Road and the Burgess Overlook jeep trail. The campground is small 14 single-family sites in all with 12 sites suitable for both RVs and tents and 2 designated tent-only sites; most sites are accessible. Each site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill, and the facility provides accessible vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection; firewood bundles can be bought from the campground host. Two non-towed vehicles are allowed per site (the first vehicle is included in the basic fee; a second vehicle is charged $9.00 per day at the campground), and the nearest RV dump station is 19 miles away at Burgess Junction. The site is administered by Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds (office@ceicamp.com). If you book through Recreation.gov, be aware that refund requests carry a $10 processing fee retained by the reservation contractor and that the campground concessionaire will not refund the contractor's retained non-refundable reservation or processing fees.
