“Everything was great with the exception of the previous days camper in our spot did not leave on time so we had to sit around and wait to get set up in our site.”

Ranger Creek Recreation Area sits at about 7,500 feet on the banks of Ranger Creek, a pine-and-aspen forest pocket in the Bighorn Mountains where granite peaks in the range of 13,000+ feet form a rugged backdrop. The site is reachable from U.S. Highway 14 east of Greybull by taking Paintrock Lake Road (Forest Road 17) a few miles up the valley; it's roughly 2 miles past Shell Creek Campground. The campground contains 12 campsites that accommodate both tents and RVs, plus a single large group site that can hold up to 150 people for overnight or day-use gatherings. Practical amenities on-site include an open shelter with picnic and serving tables, a campfire ring and grill, accessible vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection; firewood can be purchased from the campground host. Note that the nearest dump station is at Burgess Junction about 20 miles away, so RVers should plan accordingly. Ranger Creek is a convenient base for a wide range of Bighorn National Forest activities: local roads and jeep trails (Battle Creek Road to Medicine Lodge Lake, Ranger Creek Road to Shell Reservoir, Hunt Mountain Road and the Burgess Overlook trail) offer scenic off-road driving, and the Adelaide Trail nearby provides access for hiking and horseback riding toward Shell Creek and on into the Shell Creek Trail and Cloud Peak Wilderness. Anglers will find many creeks, lakes and ponds in the region with excellent trout fly-fishing, and interpretive stops such as Shell Falls Visitor Center (about 8 miles west) and Burgess Junction Visitor Center (about 20 miles north) are close enough for half-day trips. Reservations and group rates are managed through the concessionaire (Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds; gccampgrounds13@gmail.com) and through recreation.gov; group reservation prices vary with party size and extra fees will be charged at the campground if your group exceeds the number on the reservation. Refund requests made through recreation.gov incur a $10 processing fee and the reservation fee retained by the reservation contractor is non-refundable.
