“Private party use of facilities is awesome. It is nice to only have to deal with those with whom we are camping. Nice to see wildlife: a bear, cow and bull moose, etc. The building is also very nice to have cover during the afternoon showers.”

Pine Island Group Area sits on the banks of the South Fork Tongue River at about 8,400 feet along the Bighorn Scenic Byway (U.S. 14) near Burgess Junction, offering a high-mountain setting of lodgepole pine with pockets of Engelmann spruce and Douglas fir and granite peaks rising above 13,000 feet in the distance. The campground is set up specifically for groups: there is a single group site that can be used for overnight camping or day-use picnicking and is sized to accommodate up to 150 people (the maximum). That single site is listed as suitable for both RVs and tents and includes a three-sided picnic shelter equipped with 30-amp electrical plugs, picnic and serving tables, a campfire circle and grill, accessible vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection. For anglers and paddlers, nearby Sibley Lake allows non-motorized craft and has an accessible fishing dock where rainbow, brown and brook trout are commonly pursued; the surrounding public lands also offer canoeing, river and lake fishing and a network of off-road vehicle trails and scenic jeep roads. Practical details matter here: group-use fees scale by party size $65 for 1 35 people, $85 for 36 60, $105 for 61 120 and $135 for 121 150 (a fee for any people beyond the number listed on the reservation is collected at the campground) and firewood may be purchased from the campground host. Reservations and refund requests are handled through recreation.gov; refund requests processed there incur a $10 processing fee that is retained by the reservation service contractor, and the campground concessionaire cannot return the non-refundable reservation fee or that processing fee. The site is administered by Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds (gccampgrounds13@gmail.com) and is located about 27 miles west of Dayton, Wyoming, on U.S. Highway 14, with regional highlights like Shell Falls Visitor Center and the Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark within a drivable distance for day trips.
