Perched at about 6,600 feet along the banks of Trail Creek on the Teton Pass corridor, Trail Creek Campground is a small, open grassy meadow ringed by Douglas fir, spruce and patches of aspen. The site is compact there are 10 campsites in total, and all 10 accommodate both RVs and tents many of which back directly onto the creek for easy access to water and casting. Each site comes with a picnic table, campfire ring, grill and a food storage locker; the campground also provides accessible vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection. Roads and parking spurs are gravel, and because the campground sits adjacent to Wyoming Highway 22 the highway is visible from most sites and passing vehicles are audible, so plan accordingly when choosing a spot or timing naps. Expect an active high-country landscape: moose and deer are commonly seen, summer wildflowers color the meadow, and the elevation means cooler evenings and the potential for shoulder-season snow. Recreation at Trail Creek centers on the creek itself and the network of trails nearby. Anglers come for Yellowstone cutthroat and brook trout, while hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders head to Mikesell Canyon Trail the trailhead is about 2 miles away at Mike Harris Campground. The campground is also a convenient base for regional events and mountain recreation: Grand Targhee Resort (lift-served hiking and biking, scenic lift rides, guided horseback rides, a climbing wall and an 18-hole disc golf course) is nearby and hosts Targhee Fest in mid-July and the Targhee Bluegrass Festival in mid-August, and the Teton Valley Summer Festival in Driggs over the Fourth of July brings hot-air balloons, a parade and rodeo. Jackson, Wyoming is roughly 17 miles away, Grand Teton National Park's Granite Entrance about 20 miles, and Yellowstone is a two-hour drive in favorable conditions. Because the campground is small and popular, check Caribou-Targhee National Forest for current fees, reservation policies and seasonal openings before you go.
