“Access to the campground did not exist. We ended up staying in another campground in the area.”
“Gorgeous camping spot right on the reservoir. Would recommend 4 wheel drive to get up there with the primary road not open currently.”

Perched at about 5,700 feet on a hillside above the north end of Palisades Reservoir, Calamity Campground sits in the Snake River drainage roughly 55 miles east of Idaho Falls along Highway 26 just below the Palisades dam access. The site occupies mixed stands of lodgepole pine, spruce, fir, aspen and maple, and summer wildflowers dot the understory; from many sites you look down toward the reservoir rather than out across flat ground. Water recreation is the main draw here a boat ramp and large parking area are located on-site, and the reservoir supports boating, water skiing, swimming and canoeing. Anglers will find wild and stocked cutthroat trout most common, with kokanee salmon, brown and Mackinaw trout also present. Land-based routes begin nearby: the Palisades Creek Trail leads up to Upper Palisades Lake and broad views of Swan Valley, while the Big Elk Creek Trail (accessed at Big Elk Campground) threads a flower-rich canyon for hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders. Beyond the immediate reservoir there are rafting, fishing and extensive trail systems through Swan Valley and the surrounding forest for ATV use, hunting, wildlife viewing and winter sports in season. Calamity offers 40 total campsites all 40 are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents laid out across three loops with gravel roads and parking spurs. Each site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill; note that a few sites have a short set of stairs leading from the parking spur down to the site pad. Vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided, but there is no electrical service; firewood can be purchased from the on-site host. The combination of trailer-capable sites, on-site boat ramp and nearby trailheads makes this a practical base for families and mixed-use groups who want both reservoir access and trail country. Practical details such as current fees, reservation policies and seasonal opening dates aren't listed here, so plan to check with the Caribou-Targhee National Forest office or the campground's official reservation page before you go.
