Alpine North Loop sits at about 5,640 feet in Star Valley, roughly 2 miles from the town of Alpine along Highway 26, and is set among stands of lodgepole pine that give many sites a patchwork of sun and shade. The campground is relatively flat, with summer wildflowers in the understory and occasional open views across Star Valley from some pads; wind and afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, so plan for changing conditions. There are 19 campsites in total: 18 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 1 RV-only site, plus three group sites that each hold up to 50 people and come with picnic tables and campfire rings fitted with grills. Single and double sites are mixed through the loop, and a few have short stairways from the gravel parking spur down to the pad. Basic services include vault toilets, drinking water, and trash collection; there is no electricity, roads and parking spurs are gravel, and the campground host sells firewood. Recreation here is centered on nearby Palisades Reservoir boat ramps are about 2 miles away in Alpine and another ramp sits roughly 10 miles farther at Blowout Campground so boating, water skiing, swimming, canoeing and both lake and shore fishing are the main draws (expect wild and stocked cutthroat trout, brown trout, kokanee salmon and mackinaw). The confluence of the Greys, Salt and Snake rivers is close by for additional river fishing and wildlife viewing, and the Palisades Creek Trail starts near the campground, offering routes for hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders up to Upper Palisades Lake and views over Swan Valley. Beyond water recreation, the surrounding Caribou-Targhee National Forest provides opportunities for biking, hunting, OHV use, picnicking and winter sports, and you can plan day trips to Jackson (about 40 miles) and Grand Teton National Park (about 55 miles). For up-to-date information on fees, reservations and seasonal access, contact the Caribou-Targhee National Forest office before you go.
