About

Walupt Lake Campground sits on the west end of a 384-acre alpine lake, where tall hemlock, cedar and fir separate sites and frame steady views toward Mt. Adams. The shoreline is clear enough to support good trout fishing brook, rainbow and cutthroat are the common catches and both motorized and non-motorized boats are permitted, with small lakeshore beaches at the walk-in tent sites that make for easy swimming and launching. Hikers, bikers and riders will find direct access to a network of trails from the campground, including the Walupt Lake Trail, Nannie Ridge Trail and Coleman Weedpatch routes that also lead toward the Goat Rocks Wilderness with its alpine meadows, lakes and the rugged peaks where mountain goats are found. The campground's location between Mt. Adams, Mt. Rainier and Mount St. Helens also makes any of those high-country destinations workable as day trips when weather and travel time allow; to reach Walupt Lake from the lowlands, follow Highway 12 toward Packwood and continue northeast via Highway 21 onto Forest Service Road 2160. Facilities are straightforward and oriented toward classic forest camping rather than hookups: the campground has 42 sites in total 27 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 15 tent-only sites with standard gravel spurs sized to take RVs roughly 20 40 feet long, plus several lakeside walk-in tent sites with small beaches. Campsites come equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings, and vault toilets are provided on site; a horse camp sits adjacent to the main loop for users bringing stock. There is an extra-vehicle fee of $8.00; reservations and changes follow the Recreation.gov policies posted for the forest (cancellations made two or more days before arrival incur a $10 fee, later cancellations may forfeit the first night and incur service fees, no-shows are assessed a $20 fee and forfeit the first night, and refund requests must be submitted within seven days of the reservation end date), and this location has limited staffing so call (360) 686-3008 for current conditions before you go.
