North Fork Campground sits on the banks of the North Fork Cispus River beneath a canopy of hemlock, maple and Douglas fir, with clear sightlines to three big Cascade peaks Mount St. Helens, Mt. Adams and Mt. Rainier that frame the valley. The campground has 17 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents; parking spurs range from about 20 to 40 feet, with a few 40-foot pull-throughs and the remainder back-in sites. Each campsite includes a picnic table and grill, potable water is available on-site, a campground host is present during the season, and firewood is sold locally. North Fork is generally open mid-May through late September; an extra vehicle fee of $8 applies, staffing is limited so visitors are advised to call (360) 686-3008 for current conditions, and the campground is reached from Randle by following Forest Road 23 south about 10 miles from Highway 12. As a base camp, North Fork gives direct access to a diverse trail network and river recreation: the multi-use Valley Trail starts nearby for hikers, mountain bikers and OHV riders (the region offers over 50 miles of OHV trails), while the North Fork Loop and River trails are open to foot traffic. Anglers fish the Cispus River for brook trout, steelhead and salmon, and wildlife watchers may see elk, deer and occasionally bears in the area. The Cowlitz Valley Ranger District manages extensive public lands in the northern Gifford Pinchot National Forest including access to the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument and several wilderness areas such as Goat Rocks and Tatoosh so visitors looking to extend a stay can explore lookouts, longer hiking routes like the Tongue Mountain Trail (rising to about 4,838 feet), or drive to the Windy Ridge viewpoints near Mount St. Helens. Reservations carry specific cancellation rules: cancellations up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee; cancelling the day before or day of arrival results in a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's fee (one-night reservations are fully forfeited if cancelled), no-shows are charged a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night, and refund requests must be submitted through Recreation.gov within seven days after the reservation end date. In the event of an emergency closure, fees are refunded in full.
