“Love this campground, though it's hard to get in and out of and has no cell phone service whatsoever. Wish the water was connected and it was open during October.”
“Wonderful campground conveniently located near Mt. Rainier amongst big trees. No cell service or data. Some loops not suitable for large RVs or trailers.”
“La Wis Wis is my favorite campground. I love the trees and river, and the sites are large enough to not be crowded up against other campers. And, it’s close to gorgeous Mt Rainier!”

La Wis Wis sits where three waterways meet the Ohanapecosh River, the Cowlitz River and Purcell Creek in the Tatoosh Wilderness portion of Gifford Pinchot National Forest, a heavily forested landscape of Douglas firs and red cedar. The campground contains 107 sites spread across six loops: Loop A (26 sites), Loop B (15 sites), Loop C (18 sites), Loop D (28 sites), Loop E (7 sites) and Loop H (13 sites). Seventy-five sites are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, while 32 are tent-only; the Hatchery Loop (Loop H) is specifically noted as RV-capable, but much of the rest of the campground has narrow roadways and large trees that make maneuvering larger rigs difficult. A handful of riverbank sites catch the most sun, while the rest sit in dense old-growth shade and offer frequent wildlife sightings; hikers can walk directly onto the Blue Hole Trail and Purcell Falls Trail from the campground, and anglers head to nearby Butter Creek or Skate Creek for rainbow and cutthroat trout and whitefish. Facilities at La Wis Wis are straightforward and practical: 107 sites include some walk-in tent options, picnic tables, picnic shelters and grills, and both vault and flush toilets. Drinking water is available at the main campground area, but campers staying in the Hatchery Loop should plan to bring potable water or collect it at the main site. The campground works well for tent camping, car camping and truck campers with a slide-in; extra vehicles incur an $8 fee. Reservations and cancellations are handled through Recreation.gov cancellations made at least two days before arrival incur a $10 fee, cancellations the day before or on arrival carry a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night, one-night reservations forfeited if cancelled, and no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee plus the first night's rate and taxes. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after your reservation ends; in the event of an emergency closure all fees will be refunded. Staffing is limited, so call (360) 686-3008 for current conditions; the campground is located about 5 miles east of Packwood on State Route 12 and is often used as a base for exploring nearby Mount Rainier National Park (the Henry M. Jackson Visitor Center at Paradise is roughly 28 miles away).
