“Beautiful Campground, close to Paradise, very friendly Ranger!”
“Great campground for a base from which to access fine hiking.”
“Upside: many private campsites and super clean bathroom. Downside: hilly campground and too few bathrooms.”

Cougar Rock Campground sits on the southwest flank of Mount Rainier, about 14 miles east of Ashford along State Route 706/Paradise Road, and occupies forested ground at roughly 3,180 feet elevation where the Nisqually River runs nearby. From a small lookout point within the campground you can catch clear views of the glacier-clad summit on good days, and a short summer drive takes you up to the high meadows at Paradise for the peak wildflower displays. Summers here tend to be dry and cool, with daytime temperatures commonly in the 60s to 80s, but mountain weather is changeable bring layers and expect afternoon shifts. The campground adjoins old-growth forest and provides a quieter base for wildlife viewing, hiking, fishing and climbing in the park; experienced hikers can link into the strenuous Wonderland Trail from nearby approaches, and the site hosts an amphitheater for ranger-led interpretive programs that highlight the park's natural and cultural history. The facility is relatively rustic but practical: all 173 campsites have picnic tables, and the campground offers drinking water and flush toilets. Sites are divided between those that accept both RVs and tents (114) and 59 RV-designated sites, spread across six loops A (23 sites), B (33), C (31), D (37), E (30) and R (19) so you can pick a quieter loop or one closer to the river or amenities. Cougar Rock is one of only two campgrounds in Mount Rainier National Park where individual campsites can be reserved in advance; group reservations are handled separately at the nearby group campground. Pay attention to the park's check-in policy: if you fail to check in at the ranger station by noon the day after your scheduled arrival, your reservation will be canceled, you will incur a $10 service fee and forfeit the first night's fee. Food storage is important here foxes and other animals are known to visit the campground so use park-approved lockers or follow the posted guidance to keep wildlife wild.
