Ohanapecosh Campground sits on the southeast side of Mount Rainier National Park at about 1,914 feet elevation, where a cold, clear snow-fed river threads through thick old-growth Douglas fir and moss-covered boulders. The sound of the Ohanapecosh River is a constant presence here, and silver-lined falls and ancient trees are within easy reach: the Grove of the Patriarchs trail and the paths to Silver Falls start nearby, while the park's high-country meadows and glaciers at Paradise and Sunrise are a drive away. The campground is the park's most popular and contains 156 sites arranged across seven loops A (48), B (2), C (28), D (24), E (20), F (10) and H (24). Of those sites, 119 accommodate both RVs and tents, there is 1 RV-only site, and 36 are tent-only, so groups can usually find a configuration that fits their gear and party size. There's no direct view of Mount Rainier from the campsites themselves, but the mountain dominates nearby park landscapes and the summer wildflower displays in July and August are a major draw. Practical facilities are straightforward: drinking water is available but there are no electric hookups, and campers must take extra care with food storage because bears and other wildlife use the area. The Ohanapecosh Visitor Center is close by for orientation and natural- and cultural-history information, and the campground's position on State Route 123 (about four miles north of State Route 12) makes it an accessible base for hiking, climbing, wildlife viewing, fishing, biking and visiting historic sites within the park. Summer days are often dry, cool and sunny with daytime temperatures typically in the 60 80°F range, but weather can change quickly, so come prepared for variability. Note the reservation/check-in rule: if you do not check in at the Ohanapecosh Visitor Center campground window by 12:00 p.m. (the check-out time) on the day after your scheduled arrival, your reservation will be cancelled, you will incur a $10 service fee, and you will forfeit the first night's camping fee.
