Ashley National Forest
Open in Google Maps ↗
Iron Springs Group Campground sits high in Ashley National Forest at about 9,200 feet along the Red Cloud Loop Scenic Backway, roughly 20 miles north of Vernal and then a short drive up Forest Road 018. The site consists of two group sites both configured to accept RVs and tents each able to accommodate up to 50 people. One of the group areas is a fenced-in space with picnic tables, and the campground also includes the areas immediately adjacent to sites 1 and 2 with roughly a quarter mile available for overflow parking; large gravel parking areas sit next to each site. Practical amenities are straightforward: vault toilets, a source of drinking water, picnic tables and campfire circles at each group site. There is no detail provided about hookups or additional utilities, so plan for a self-contained stay and confirm current services with the Forest Service before arriving. The Red Cloud Loop provides the immediate draw for recreation here a maintained dirt road that offers scenic driving and miles of trails used by ATVs, hikers and mountain bikers. Within about 10 miles you'll find East Park and Oaks Park reservoirs (both stocked with rainbow trout; East Park has a boat ramp), and nearby Brush Creek Caves are popular for caving and geocaching. A short longer drive brings you to Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, where larger water-based activities and guided dam tours are available and the Green River offers rafting and interpretive history and rock art sites. Ashley National Forest supports a wide range of activities biking, boating, fishing, OHV use, horseback riding, camping, wildlife viewing and more but seasonal access and road conditions can change quickly at this elevation, so check for current road and campground status, fees or reservation requirements with the Forest Service before you go.
