“Nice to have a gravel pad for pitching the tent under muddy conditions, but the gravel fire pit could have been better. Had to dig out the center in order to build a fire.”
“Gooseberry is Andy’s favorite camping spot. We had to leave early because of tire problems so we didn’t get to stay. Hopefully, we can try again. Thank you. ”

Gooseberry Reservoir Campground sits in a broad mountain meadow at about 8,400 feet, with open sites that face the small reservoir and a backdrop of aspens, firs and sagebrush on the surrounding slopes. The lake is a quiet spot for anglers and paddlers: cutthroat and rainbow trout are common, and only hand-powered craft are allowed (there's no boat ramp), so expect canoes and kayaks rather than powerboats. The Great Western Trail runs along the campground, providing immediate access for day hikes, mountain biking and off-highway vehicle riding; Mammoth Guard Station is roughly a mile to the south for those who like short side trips. Because the sites are in an exposed meadow rather than a forested canopy, mornings and evenings deliver wide light and views while mid-day offers little shade a factor to consider in summer and for strong sun exposure at high elevation. The site itself is small and straightforward: there are eight campsites total, each configured to accommodate both tents and RVs, with long parking spurs that readily take large rigs. Facilities are basic vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water or garbage service at the campground so bring your own water, pack out trash, and plan for self-contained camping. A well-maintained dirt road leads in, making access relatively easy for cars and RVs; the campground lies about a dozen miles east of Fairview via Highway 31 and three miles up Forest Development Road 124. Before you go, check the Forest Service website or local ranger district for current fees, reservation rules and seasonal road or snow conditions, especially given the high elevation and limited services.
