“The host was amazing and the site was perfect for a big group. Plenty of space and very secluded from the other campgrounds. Short walk through the woods to the lake is about the only thing to deal with, but that's what camping is all about. ”

Payson Lakes Campground sits roughly 12 miles up Payson Canyon on the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway, south of the town of Payson, at about 8,000 feet in a mixed aspen, fir and pine forest. The lakes here McClelland, Box and Big East shape the campsite experience: Big East Lake has a small swim beach, picnic tables and flush toilets at a popular day-use area, and a paved nature path begins at the parking area and circles that lake. Boating is limited to non-motorized craft, so canoeing and kayaking are common and anglers come expecting rainbow and brown trout; powerboats are prohibited. Wildlife is frequently sighted around the water and summer brings plentiful wildflowers. The campground totals 86 sites: 83 sites suitable for both RVs and tents, 1 RV-only site, and 2 glamping sites. Sites are arranged in three loops (Loop A: 23 sites; Loop B: 35 sites; Loop C: 25 sites) plus a separate group area with three group sites. Facilities are straightforward and well organized: most campsites have picnic tables and campfire rings, roads and parking spurs are paved, campground hosts are on site and firewood is available for purchase. Three group sites are sited away from the single and double loops and come with picnic and serving tables, grills, dutch-oven cooking surfaces, campfire circles, water spigots and cement site pads; vault toilets serve Group Site A, flush toilets are located between Group Sites B and C, and vault toilets are available in the single/double loops. Fees are paid by cash, check or Scan & Pay via the Recreation.gov app typical rates include $29 for a single site (capacity 8), $58 for a double site (capacity 16), $111 for glamping (capacity 8, deposit required), group site A at $285 (capacity 100) and group sites B & C at $200 each (capacity 75); day use is $15, an extra vehicle is $10, and a Payson Lakes season day-use pass is $60. Reservations, changes and cancellations are handled through Recreation.gov (reservation phone 1-877-444-6777); note a $10 service fee applies to changes or cancellations, late cancellations may forfeit the first night's fee, no-shows can be assessed additional fees, and refund requests must be made within 14 days of departure. For facility-specific questions call (385) 273-1100. The nearby Mount Nebo Wilderness and the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway extend the options for hiking, auto touring, wildlife viewing and other National Forest activities.
