Ann S ★ 5 · Jul 2024Beautiful, peaceful setting. The camp host does an amazing job to keep the bathrooms clean and campers in check (we had a large, loud group next to us). Can't wait to go again!

Maple Lake Campground sits at about 5,800 feet in a quiet, timbered pocket of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest where white fir, pinyon pine and Gambel oak give sites a mix of sun and dappled shade. The campground fronts calm water that invites canoeing, floating and kayaking, while the creek below is known for rainbow and brook trout anglers will find promising fishing right off the lower campsites. Red Lake Trail begins from the upper lakeside sites for hikers looking to push beyond the shoreline, and the Mount Nebo Wilderness lies adjacent, offering high-alpine trails, wildflower meadows and wildlife viewing; the 37-mile Nebo Loop Scenic Byway and the Devils Kitchen geological area are close enough for a day trip. Access is limited compared with larger forest sites: Maple Lake is roughly a few miles up Payson Canyon, about three and a half miles south of town and a mile south of Maple Bench Campground, so expect a quieter, more primitive experience rather than paved RV hookups. The campground has 10 single campsites officially classified for both RVs and tents each equipped with a picnic table, serving table and a campfire ring with grill, plus vault restrooms; there is no piped water on site, and the forest road and site layouts make tents and very small campers the best fit. Site fees are $27 per night (sites accommodate up to eight people plus one vehicle); day-use picnicking in a campsite is $15 and each additional vehicle is $10. Payments accepted are cash, check or Scan & Pay via the Recreation.gov app. Reservations follow Recreation.gov rules: a $10 service fee is withheld on cancellations, and cancellations the day before or on arrival incur the $10 fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use (no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night); date changes outside your original reservation carry a $10 change fee while extensions or shortenings that keep original dates generally do not. Interagency pass discounts apply only to certain passes and only to the recreation (use) fee for individual campsites; refunds to cards are returned to the original payment method (cash/check refunds are issued by Treasury check and can take several weeks). If you plan to arrive with multiple vehicles, large RVs, or need potable water, plan accordingly this is a backcountry-oriented lake campground designed for simple, low-service stays.
