Maple Bench Campground is a small, quiet site sitting at about 5,800 feet on a sudden bench above the canyon carved by Peteetneet Creek, with views down the valley toward the town of Payson and immediate frontage along the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway. Ten rustic sites are scattered through an open stand of white fir, pinyon pine and Gambel oak that gives a mix of sun and dappled shade; the layout and limited space make the campground most suitable for tent campers and very small campers even though sites are designated for both RV and tent use. The creek below is known for rainbow and brook trout fishing, and Maple Lake only about a half mile from the loop road offers calm water for canoeing, kayaking and floating; the Red Lake trail departs from the upper camping area by the lake. The Mount Nebo Wilderness lies adjacent, providing high-alpine trails, wildflower meadows and wildlife viewing opportunities, while the 37-mile Nebo Loop Scenic Byway (including the Devils Kitchen geological stop and its short trail to red rock hoodoos) is the main auto-tour route through the area. Facilities are straightforward and low-key: ten sites each include a picnic/serving table and a campfire ring with grill, and vault restrooms serve the campground. Fees are posted per site at $27.00 for a single site (capacity 8 people + 1 vehicle), day-use picnicking in a campsite is $15.00, and additional vehicles are $10.00 each; payments accepted include cash, check, or Scan & Pay with the Recreation.gov app. Reservations and refund rules follow the standard Recreation.gov policies cancellations before arrival are refundable less a $10 service fee, while cancellations the day before or on the day of arrival incur a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee (one-night reservations forfeit the entire amount); no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night. Some Interagency Passes (Senior Annual/Lifetime, Access, Golden Age/Golden Access) may provide a discount on the recreation fee for individual campsites if the pass holder occupies the site; check Recreation.gov for full details, payment/refund methods and any temporary policy updates before you go.
