Altamont Campground sits at about 7,400 feet in dense stands of aspen, fir and spruce along the paved Alpine Loop Scenic Byway, with the Mount Timpanogos Wilderness looming immediately adjacent. It is a compact facility: the campground essentially offers a single site that can accommodate both RVs and tents (the site is managed as a group site with a capacity of up to 100 people and a fee of $330). Visitors will find a short paved approach road and a large paved parking area, a roomy picnic shelter with several tables and a central campfire circle, plus flush toilets and drinking water on site. Practical details to note before you arrive: there is a $10 charge for each extra vehicle, reservations and changes are handled through Recreation.gov (or 1-877-444-6777), and for facility-specific questions you can call (385) 273-1100. Recreation.gov's reservation policy includes a $10 service fee for most changes or cancellations, penalties for late cancellations (customers who cancel the day before or on the day of arrival generally forfeit the first night's fee in addition to the service charge), potential $20 service fees for no-shows, and a 14-day window to request refunds after departure. The campground's location makes it a strong base for mountain recreation. The long Timpooneke Trail a 15-mile round-trip route to the summit of Mount Timpanogos begins just across the road at nearby Timpooneke Campground, and the Aspen Grove Trail is also within easy reach; horses are permitted on Timpooneke Trail. For shorter excursions and scenery, the 20-mile Alpine Loop Scenic Byway threads through alpine canyons, meadows and aspen groves, while the rough dirt Timpooneke Road skirts Mount Timpanogos and is frequently used for mountain biking and birding. A few miles down American Fork Canyon, Timpanogos Cave National Monument offers a steep 1.5-mile hike to guided cave tours, and Cascade Springs about 9 miles away features family-friendly accessible boardwalks around natural springs. Water recreation and fishing for rainbow, brook and brown trout are available at nearby Tibble Fork and Silver Flat Reservoirs (only non-motorized boats are allowed; the north shore at Tibble Fork has partial access, and divers commonly use the south shore). Expect abundant summer wildflowers, active wildlife, and dramatic fall color in the aspens during autumn.
