About

St. Charles Campground sits beside St. Charles Creek in St. Charles Canyon, about eight miles from Bear Lake State Park and North Beach, reached via a short drive west of Highway 89 on Forest Road 412. The facility is very small there is a single campsite that accepts both RVs and tents and a paved road brings you right to the entrance. Basic amenities at the site include flush toilets and a drinking-water source; there are no listed hookups or additional developed pads, so plan to arrive self-contained if you need power or sewer. Vegetation is varied and fairly close to the creek: stands of aspen give partial shade while lodgepole pine, Engelmann spruce, willow, dogwoods and wild roses help break up sight lines between sites and create pockets of privacy and bird habitat. Despite its compact footprint, St. Charles is well positioned for a wide range of outdoor pursuits in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. The North Fork Trail connects to Highline Trail #316 a long-distance route used by hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders and motorcyclists and the creek itself is managed by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game for good to excellent fishing through much of the year. Other regional offerings include hunting in season, boating and swimming at nearby Bear Lake, and wildlife viewing at the Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge. A short drive brings you to Minnetonka Cave, where guided tours run every 30 minutes from early June through Labor Day, and Bear Lake's Raspberry Days (first weekend in August) draws crowds for a parade, rodeo and fireworks. Check current Forest Service information before you go for up-to-date seasonal openings, fees and reservation or permit requirements (fishing and hunting both require appropriate licenses).
