Willow Flat Campground sits on the banks of the Cub River in a valley at about 6,300 feet, where stands of pine, spruce and mixed hardwoods create partial shade and frame views of nearby peaks. The riverbank is lined with dense willows the preferred browse for local moose and deer and elk are commonly seen in the area. The campground has 54 sites in total: 49 are configured for both RVs and tents, while 5 are tent-only; in addition there are six group campsites that range in capacity from about 24 to 100 people. Amenities are basic but practical: vault toilets and drinking water, gravel roads and parking spurs, and picnic shelters at some single and group sites. A small amphitheater with bleacher seating and a cement platform sits at group site G03, and a few single campsites are reached by short footbridges over the river from the parking spur, so be prepared for those slightly different access patterns. Recreation begins right at the campground: the Cub River fishes for wild cutthroat and hatchery rainbow trout, and several trails start within the campground, including a half-mile nature trail to Sam Parkinson Spring. The multi-use Cub River Trail originates here as well, offering hiking, mountain and dirt biking, off-highway vehicle travel and horseback riding and providing access to the Highline Trail, the North Fork of St. Charles Creek and the Cub River Guard Station. Willow Flat is reached from Preston by heading south on U.S. 91 and then east onto Cub River Road (Forest Road 406), following Forest Road 406 just over a mile past the Cache National Forest boundary to the campground; roads and parking spurs inside the site are gravel. For current fees, reservation policies and seasonal openings or road conditions (not provided here), consult the Caribou-Targhee National Forest website or recreation.gov before you go.
