“Host was very helpful in finding us what we needed. Showed us local sites and trails, was extremely helpful.”
“Secluded campground with easy access to Bear Lake. The bathrooms are clean, but few and far between. The camp host was friendly and helpful. Site #14 was very private but a little hard to find (you have to turn right by the bathroom at the entrance and not go around the loop) ”

Porcupine Campground sits tucked into a canyon along St. Charles Creek, where stands of pine and aspen offer partial shade and summer wildflowers brighten the understory. The site is small and quietly set seven campsites in total, six laid out for family use plus a single group site that can accommodate up to 20 people and every site is configured to accept both tents and RVs. Roads to and inside the campground are paved, and visitors will find flush toilets and drinking water on site. Because the campground is accessed about seven miles up St. Charles Canyon Road (Forest Road 412) west off U.S. Highway 89, the approach is straightforward, but services are limited: check the Caribou-Targhee National Forest office for current fees, reservation options and seasonal opening dates before you go. Recreation radiates outward from the campground. St. Charles Creek runs past the campsites and is managed for trout by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game; anglers find good fishing most of the year, and in-season big-game hunting is common in the surrounding forest. The North Fork Trail nearby links to the Highline Trail #316, a 55-mile National Trail System route used by hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders and motorcyclists; that makes Porcupine a convenient base for multi-day outings. Two miles away is Minnetonka Cave, where guided tours run roughly every 30 minutes daily from early June through Labor Day, and the shores of Bear Lake including Bear Lake State Park and North Beach are close enough for a day trip. More broadly, the Caribou-Targhee National Forest offers biking, boating, OHV riding, picnicking, wildlife viewing and winter sports across its three-million-plus acres, and special events such as Bear Lake's Raspberry Days festival the first weekend in August add seasonal highlights.
