About

Duck Creek Campground sits at about 8,400 feet on the Markagunt Plateau, framed by stands of aspen and Douglas fir and punctuated by several old-growth Ponderosa pines that are 200 500 years old. The campground's 68 sites are all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, with the largest concentration in Loop A (36 sites) and Loop B (18 sites); smaller groupings include Loop C (4 sites), Loop D (5 sites), Loop E (1 site) and two single-site areas listed as RND and WAGO. Walkable from the loops is Duck Creek Pond, a small, accessible spot for shore fishing and quiet wildlife viewing, while volcanic rock fields formed from ancient lava tubes give the surrounding forest a dramatic, textured landscape. Facilities include flush and vault toilets, an amphitheater with a covered stage and bench seating, and a dump station at the campground entrance; several drinking-water spigots are scattered through the loops, but potable water is provided only seasonally (Memorial Day through mid-September) and there are no water hookups at campsites, so fill tanks at the dump station before you set up. Recreation options are wide and varied: Duck Creek Pond and nearby Navajo Lake offer trout fishing (rainbow, brook, brown and cutthroat), and the Markagunt OHV Trail System can be accessed from within the campground, providing roughly 300 miles of ATV/OHV routes. Note the campground's OHV rules carefully OHVs are allowed only in Loops C, D and E and riders may travel from their campsite to the trail in Loop D and back, but joyriding inside the campground is not permitted; Loops A and B are closed to all OHVs, including street-legal machines. Non-motorized recreation is strong too: the Virgin River Rim Trail, a popular 32-mile route for hikers, cyclists and equestrians with distant views toward Zion, is only a few minutes' drive away. For services and local info, the Duck Creek Visitor Center sits across the road with trail maps and current conditions; Duck Creek Village, about two miles east, supplies restaurants, groceries, fuel and cabin rentals, while Navajo Lake Lodge about six miles away offers a boat dock and small aluminum boat rentals. Cedar Breaks National Monument and the Ashdown Gorge Wilderness (home to ancient bristlecone pines) are nearby, and both Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks are within an easy day-trip distance. Check with the Duck Creek Visitor Center or the Dixie National Forest office for up-to-date fees, reservation policies and seasonal road or trail conditions before you go.
