Monty Campground sits on the lower Metolius River just above Lake Billy Chinook and offers a quiet, rustic place to pitch a tent or park a very small RV or van. The site count is small 12 total campsites, with all 12 listed as both RV sites and tent sites but the road in is narrow and can be very rough, so larger RVs and trailers are discouraged unless you plan to move extremely slowly and carefully. There are no electric hookups and no drinking water on site, so come prepared with your own supply. Each campsite includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill, and vault toilets are available. Monty operates on a first-come, first-served basis, which makes arriving early important in summer; note that Recreation.gov policies apply where reservations are offered for other facilities, including service fees for changes or cancellations and online reservation fees where charged. Fishing is the main draw here the Metolius and the lake's backcountry arms support trout, bass, salmon, whitefish and more but the setting also places you close to a range of water and land recreation. Lake Billy Chinook, formed behind Round Butte Dam, offers motorized and non-motorized boating, swimming and water skiing nearby (Perry South Campground is the local water-access hub), while the Metolius River's Wild and Scenic designation means steady cold flows suited to fly fishing and whitewater boating a short drive upstream. Hikers can head toward the Tam-a-lau Trail at Cove Palisades State Park, and the Lava Lands Visitor Center in Bend provides interpretive exhibits about the region's volcanic landscape. The site is staffed seasonally roughly late May through early September; call local staff at (541) 325-5315 during that period, and for general information when unstaffed call (503) 464-8515.
