“Good, please try to preserve all the trees. ”
“Our favorite site of the trip, quiet and directly on the Deschutes River. ”
“Visited in Late May. This was the worst Rec.gov campsite we’ve been to. SO many bugs (I know that’s not really controllable), but the outhouse bathroom was locked shut. No picnic table or fire pit, nothing to see. It was just a place to sleep for the night.”

Big River Campground sits along a calm stretch of the Deschutes River just south of Sunriver, about a 17-mile drive from Bend on Highway 97 and local forest roads that lead you to Bonanza Lane and into the site. The campground contains 13 total campsites three large, open group sites and ten single sites and every site is set up to accommodate both tents and RVs. Picnic tables, campfire rings with grills, vault toilets and a boat ramp are provided, and many sites have easy waterfront access so launching a canoe or kayak is straightforward. Because the river here is limited to non-motorized boats, paddlers find six miles of mostly Class II flatwater below Sunriver that's well suited to relaxed floats; the three larger group sites are particularly useful for family reunions or club outings that want direct river access and space to spread out. Important reservation note: once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation. Recreation at Big River ranges with the seasons. Summer attracts anglers and paddlers the Deschutes supports kokanee, rainbow, bull and brown trout and boat or drift fishing in the deeper pools is often the most productive method as well as hikers and rafters using nearby trail networks and river put-ins. In winter, the same forested corridors become venues for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The landscape around the campground shifts from ponderosa pine and aspen stands to lava flows and basalt shorelines along the river, and wildlife sightings can include deer, elk and a variety of migratory birds. For day trips, Newberry National Volcanic Monument is accessible (about 12 miles to Lava Lands Visitor Center and roughly 25 miles to Newberry Caldera), and the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway is within easy reach for high-lake views of South Sister, Broken Top and Mount Bachelor.
