Wyeth Campground on the Deschutes River is a very small, riverside site about 27 miles south of Bend on US-97 and then roughly 8 miles west on County Road 43; look for the sign on the south side of the road. There are just 4 campsites in total: three sites that will accommodate both RVs and tents and one tent-only site, so this is a low-density place compared with larger campgrounds. All sites come with a picnic table and a fire pit, and vault toilets are on site, but there are no electric or water hookups campers must bring their own water supply. A boat ramp gives direct access to the river, however motorized boating is not permitted on this stretch of the Deschutes, so the ramp is primarily for non-motorized craft used for paddling and angling. Note: Oregon has two Wyeth campgrounds; this one is in Deschutes National Forest on the Deschutes River (not the Wyeth in the Columbia River Gorge), so be sure you've selected the correct location when making plans or reservations. Recreation at Wyeth is focused on the river and the surrounding forested landscape: paddling, fishing, swimming and riverside picnicking are the most immediate draws, and the mixed conifer setting opens out to hundreds of miles of trails and other backcountry opportunities within Deschutes National Forest. The wider area offers a long list of activities hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and horse camping, OHV routes, winter sports, wildlife viewing and scenic auto touring and several notable destinations are within easy driving distance. Newberry National Volcanic Monument (about a 45-minute drive) provides interpretive programs and the Lava River Cave, and the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway runs for 66 miles through high country and alpine lakes. Practical note on reservations: once your reservation start date has begun, neither Recreation.gov nor the campground manager can modify that reservation, so check dates and campground identity carefully before arrival.
