What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (137 reviews, ★ 4.0). Not written or edited by us.

“Lots of reserved site were empty. I wish there was at least a small refund so people would cancel their reservation if they can't use it. Then it would free it up for others to enjoy. ”

Rachael L 4 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Amazing camp ground experience! Being so close to the lake was wonderful and being 30 minutes away from Crater Lake was a huge plus. My fiancé and I are planning to stay there again. ”

Megan B 5 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“A great base for hiking Mt. Thielsen and Mt. Bailey as well as exploring Crator Lake. The campground is spacious with great views and shade. The only downside was the density of mosquitos.”

John C 5 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

About

Perched on the west shore of Diamond Lake beneath Mount Bailey, Thielsen View Campground spreads across three loops Loop A with 21 sites, Loop B with 20, and Loop C with 20 for a total of 61 campsites, each configured to accommodate both RVs and tents. Sites sit close to the water and are sheltered by a mixed-conifer canopy that keeps most campsites shaded through the warm summer days; many spots look eastward, making early-morning sunrises over Mount Thielsen an easy draw. The campground is reservation-only, and practical amenities are straightforward: water spigots and gray-water sumps are distributed through the loops, each loop has at least two vault toilets, and campers have free use of the campground's boat ramp. If you need to dump an RV, the nearest paid dump is at the resort gas station (fee $5) or you can use Forest Service dump stations at nearby Diamond Lake or Broken Arrow; note that additional vehicles incur a $5 per-vehicle nightly fee that must be paid at the campground fee kiosk upon arrival. Thielsen View is a strong base for anglers and day-hikers alike. Diamond Lake receives an annual stocking of 300,000 rainbow trout, and fishing from shore or by boat is one of the more popular pastimes; the campground's boat ramp makes launching easy for overnight visitors. The paved John Dellenback Trail makes an 11-mile loop around the lake for walkers and cyclists, while trailheads for Mount Bailey and Rodney Butte are just a short drive away for steeper hikes. Beyond the lake you'll find the Pacific Crest Trail, Diamond Lake Resort and stables, and routes that lead toward Lemolo Lake and Crater Lake National Park, and the broader Umpqua National Forest supports auto touring, biking, climbing, horseback riding, OHV use, picnicking, swimming and even overnight stays in some lookout cabins. The campground sits roughly 80 miles east of Roseburg along OR-138 in the Diamond Lake Recreation Area and is straightforward to reach from either Bend or Klamath Falls via Highway 97 and OR-138, with access through the Diamond Lake loop road near the resort.
