Rujada Campground sits about 21 miles east of Cottage Grove (roughly a 45-minute drive from Eugene) on a riverside terrace above Layng Creek, at an elevation near 1,200 feet. The site is planted among Douglas firs, hardwoods and ferns, and many of the campsites are shaded and spaced for privacy making it a popular spot for family picnics as well as overnight stays. There are 15 campsites total; all 15 are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents. Practical facilities include flush toilets, running water, picnic tables, campfire rings and garbage collection, and a campground host is typically on site during the summer season. Within the campground you'll also find a historic Civilian Conservation Corps shelter and a kid's playground with obstacles, swings, a teeter-totter and monkey bars; a day-use picnic area inside the loop can be reserved for larger gatherings. Recreation at Rujada connects directly to the Layng Creek riparian corridor swimming from the creek banks is a summertime draw and the Swordfern Trail winds through rich riparian Douglas fir forest for a short woodland hike. A cluster of waterfall hikes lies within about 10 miles of the campground: Spirit Falls (0.4 mile, more difficult, 60-foot drop), Moon Falls (0.5 mile, easy, 125-foot cascade) and Pinard Falls (0.6 mile, more difficult, 105-foot fall), all doable as day trips from Rujada. The broader Umpqua National Forest around Rujada offers additional opportunities for biking, fishing, horseback riding, OHV travel, auto touring, climbing and overnight stays in fire lookouts or cabins activities that complement the picnicking, swimming and campsite-based recreation here. For questions when the host is unavailable, contact the Cottage Grove Ranger Station at 541-767-5000; reservations and fee information are handled through Recreation.gov (online) or by calling 877-444-6777.
