Schwarz Park sits below Dorena Lake in the rolling, partially wooded hills of the southern Willamette Valley, about five miles east of Cottage Grove. The campground contains 65 campsites each configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and a mix of single- and double-family sites plus six group sites, so it works for solo campers, families and small groups. On-site amenities are straightforward and family-friendly: flush toilets, drinking water, hot showers, a dump station and a large playground that keeps younger visitors busy. You cannot make or change reservations at the campground booth; all bookings must be made in advance through Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. As a practical note, staff will hold a campsite until 2:00 p.m. on the day after the scheduled arrival date for late arrivals, but no-show and cancellation policies (below) are enforced, so plan accordingly. The park is primarily a water- and trail-based destination. Dorena Lake offers boating, water skiing, sailing, swimming and fishing, and Baker Bay County Park on the lake's south side provides a boat ramp and marina. The 14-mile Row River Trail runs from downtown Cottage Grove past the dam and along the lake, open to hikers, cyclists and horseback riders, and the Cottage Grove Scenic Byway winds past seven historic covered bridges in the area. The lakeshore is managed for wildlife habitat, so birdwatching and wildlife viewing are common from the shore and trail edges in the mix of marshland, conifer forest and grassland at the low foothills of the Calapooya Mountains. Expect generally mild recreation-season temperatures (from the low 50s up toward the upper 90s) with a higher chance of rain from May through mid-June. Reservation changes incur a $10 service fee; canceling the day before or the day of arrival for an individual campsite also forfeits the first night's fee (group facilities canceled less than 14 days out face similar penalties). No-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night, and refunds are handled through Recreation.gov (card refunds return to the original card; check or cash refunds are mailed and may take 6 8 weeks).
