Fort Gibson Lake Office, Taylor Ferry Campground, 8568 State Hwy 251A
Open in Google Maps ↗
Taylor Ferry South sits in a heavily wooded stretch on the south shore of Fort Gibson Lake, reachable just off Highway 51 about five miles east of Wagoner. The drive drops you into an oak-hickory forest (with a line of pines along the entry road) and a campground whose rocky shoreline usually slopes gradually to the water, making launch and shoreline access straightforward. The facility operates year-round and contains 88 campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents; services geared to wheeled rigs include a dump station and a nearby boat ramp, while everyone benefits from flush and pit toilets, showers, and drinking water. Across the highway a man-made sandy swim beach and a small playground provide a shallow, family-friendly place to swim and play, and within a mile you'll find marinas, stores and private boat or RV storage if you need fuel, bait or long-term parking. The lake itself spreads nearly 20,000 acres with roughly 225 miles of shoreline, so recreation is the main draw: boating and water sports dominate in summer, while anglers target black bass, white bass, crappie and several varieties of catfish and panfish (three heated fishing docks are maintained for winter crappie fishing). Trails and public hunting lands around the reservoir offer hiking, biking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing, and during hunting seasons visitors pursue whitetail deer, bobwhite quail, mourning dove, ducks, geese, cottontail rabbit and squirrel. Historic Fort Gibson established in 1824 and open to visitors is a short drive away, where reenactments and preserved 19th-century structures add a cultural counterpoint to lake activities. Practical notes: the campground accepts reservations year-round, cancellations made 48 hours or more before arrival carry a $10 fee, and cancellations within 24 hours incur a $10 fee plus the first night's camping charge; the campground's GPS address is 33814 E. 746 Rd., Wagoner, OK 74467.
