Dam Site Campground sits immediately below Fort Gibson Dam on the west bank of the Grand (Neosho) River, roughly five miles northwest of the town and historic military post that give the lake its name. The campground was severely damaged by recent flooding and now operates as a seasonal, primitive site: none of the campsites have water or electric hookups, there are no full-service facilities on site, and camping is free for overnight stays while the area remains open for day use. The loop contains 23 primitive campsites for small groups and families, and two covered shelters a group day-use shelter and an Overlook shelter can be reserved through the Fort Gibson Project Office; because the campground's infrastructure was impacted by recent high water, check with the project office for current access, seasonal opening dates, and any temporary closures before you go. The wider Fort Gibson Lake area is what draws most visitors: the nearly 20,000-acre reservoir offers extensive boating and swimming opportunities, roughly 225 miles of shoreline for exploration, and strong fishing for black bass, white bass, crappie and several varieties of catfish and panfish (three heated fishing docks remain available for winter crappie anglers). Surrounding oak-hickory woodlands roll into the river valleys, providing habitat for migrating waterfowl and year-round birding, and thousands of acres of public hunting land where white-tailed deer, quail, doves, ducks, geese, cottontails and squirrels are found. If you want a dose of local history after a day on the water, the National Historic Landmark site at Fort Gibson is only a short drive away and maintains reconstructed and original 19th-century structures with periodic living-history events.
