Washunga Bay Campground sits on the banks of Kaw Lake in north-central Oklahoma, a short drive north of Kaw City and roughly east of Ponca City along the Arkansas River corridor. The campground offers 24 campsites in total; each of those 24 sites is configured to serve both RVs and tents and many include electric hookups, with drinking water and flush toilets on site. A dedicated boat ramp at Washunga Bay puts the 17,000-acre lake within easy reach for anglers and boaters; Kaw Lake itself holds 168 miles of shoreline at a normal elevation of about 1,010 feet above sea level and is one of nine public use areas administered around the reservoir. For reservations, fees, and seasonal details, contact the Kaw Lake Office (9400 Lake Road, Ponca City, OK 74604, 580-762-5611, od-fkk@swt02.swt.usace.army.mil); note that the larger Kaw Lake complex also maintains separate group camping areas (reservations required) at Osage Cove and Sarge Creek Cove. Access to Washunga Bay is via Highway 11 east of Kaw City and a short county-road drive north following posted signs. Beyond the campground's immediate conveniences, Washunga Bay is a practical base for a wide range of outdoor pursuits on Kaw Lake. The reservoir and Arkansas River are known for producing large channel and flathead catfish as well as crappie, white (sand) bass and walleye, and the lake supports ten public boat ramps plus two full-service marinas at McFadden Cove and Pioneer Park. Hikers and horseback riders can connect with eastern-shore routes the Eagle View Hiking Trail runs about 12 miles between Osage Cove and Burbank Landing, and the Five Fingers Equestrian Trail continues from Burbank Landing to Sarge Creek Cove (both trails close during Oklahoma's deer rifle and primitive firearms seasons). Wildlife viewing is significant here year-round, with fall waterfowl concentrations and one of Oklahoma's larger wintering bald eagle populations peaking shortly after the new year; hunters will also find populations of whitetail deer, turkey, quail, rabbit and squirrel in the broader area. Close to Washunga Bay you'll also find historical and cultural sites, including Native American archaeological locations and the Pioneer Woman Museum, making the campground a practical jumping-off point for both natural and cultural exploration.
