Bear Creek Cove Campground sits on the lakeshore of Kaw Lake in north-central Oklahoma, south of Newkirk and a short drive from Ponca City, with Kaw Lake's broad surface (17,000 acres) and 168 miles of shoreline framing the view. The lake's normal elevation is 1,010 feet, and the cove's boat ramp makes it straightforward to put a boat in the water for fishing or cruising. Kaw Lake and the Arkansas River are known for large catfish as well as crappie, white (sand) bass and walleye, so anglers will find good opportunities right from the cove; winter visitors often see sizable numbers of bald eagles with peak viewing shortly after the New Year through January. Hikers and equestrians can reach eastern-shore trails such as the 12-mile Eagle View Trail and the Five Fingers Equestrian Trail that link Osage Cove, Burbank Landing and Sarge Creek Cove, though users should note both trails close during Oklahoma's deer rifle and primitive firearms seasons. The broader area also offers hunting for deer, turkey, quail, rabbit and squirrel, and local cultural attractions include historic Native American sites and the Pioneer Woman Museum.
