McFadden Cove Campground sits on the banks of Kaw Lake just north of the dam, about seven miles east of Ponca City, and gives campers direct access to the water without the scale of a large resort. The site is small 15 campsites in total and each is configured to serve both RVs and tents with individual water and electric hookups; a vault toilet is the only sanitary facility on-site, so plan accordingly. A public boat ramp is "just around the bend," and the lake itself supports multiple marinas (including one at McFadden Cove), making it straightforward to launch and refuel for a day on the water. Campsites are $18 per night and must be reserved through Recreation.gov; for broader questions about the lake and seasonal conditions you can contact the Kaw Lake office (Ponca City) listed by the Corps of Engineers. Kaw Lake sits at a normal elevation of about 1,010 feet, covers roughly 17,000 surface acres, and offers 168 miles of shoreline so while McFadden Cove is compact, it opens onto a large landscape of water and shore to explore. The campground is a practical base for the full range of Kaw Lake recreation. Anglers come for some of Oklahoma's largest catfish and for crappie, sand (white) bass and walleye, and boaters will appreciate the nearby ramps and marina services; swimming is designated at Pioneer Park and Sandy Park a short drive away. Wildlife viewing is strong year-round fall and winter bring migrating ducks and geese and, in winter, one of the state's larger concentrations of bald eagles (peak viewing usually shortly after the new year and through January). Hikers and horse riders use trails on the lake's eastern shore the Eagle View Trail is about 12 miles between Osage Cove and Burbank Landing, and the Five Fingers Equestrian Trail runs from Burbank Landing to Sarge Creek Cove though both trails close during Oklahoma's deer rifle and primitive firearms seasons. Beyond fishing and boating, Kaw Lake recreation includes biking, picnicking, playgrounds, water sports, environmental education opportunities and concession services around the lake, so McFadden Cove works well as a quiet, water-focused base camp for a wide range of outdoor activities.
