Lake Alva Campground sits on the north shore of a glacial lake tucked between the Swan and Mission ranges at about 4,200 feet, so summer days tend to be noticeably cool and the forest feels alive with birdsong. The campground has 39 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents; each site includes a paved parking stall, picnic table and a fire ring with grill. Nineteen sites in Loop 1 are reservable during the busy summer window (the Friday before Memorial Day through the Tuesday after Labor Day) and convert to first-come, first-served outside those dates. The other 20 sites in Loop 2 are strictly first-come, first-served and payment is handled onsite by scanning a Recreation.gov QR code, so download the free Recreation.gov app to your phone before you arrive. Nightly fees for individual sites are $20 during the reservation season; vehicles that don't fit in a designated spur must pay an additional $5 and park in the day-use area (roadsides are closed to parking). The gate is left open year-round, but the access road is not plowed winter access depends on snow depth and campground hosts are on site around the clock. Activities center on the water and the surrounding forested valleys. Lake Alva is managed as a no-wake lake year-round, so boating is quiet and many paddlers and evening boaters find tranquil conditions; there's a concrete boat ramp and trailer parking free from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Swimming, paddling and fishing are popular anglers chase kokanee salmon, whitefish, pike, trout and perch and loon nesting areas are protected in May and June (you'll often hear their calls from the shore). Facilities include accessible vault toilets, drinking water and trash receptacles scattered through the campground, and day-use areas are open and free from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wildlife is abundant: expect to see deer, elk and mountain goats and to be alert for grizzly and black bears; bald and golden eagles, trumpeter swans, herons and many ducks also frequent the area. For supplies, rentals and services head about 10 miles south to Seeley Lake; Missoula and Glacier National Park are within reasonable driving distance for day trips. For facility-specific questions or current conditions call (406) 677-2233.
