FOREST ROAD 2421
Open in Google Maps ↗
Limber Pine Campground sits about 12 miles south of Red Lodge, Montana, just off the Beartooth Highway and reached from U.S. 212 by turning onto Rock Creek Road (Forest Road 2421) and driving roughly a mile. The site occupies a stretch of Rock Creek beneath the Beartooth Range and is shaded by aspens and pines; wildlife in the area includes deer, elk and even grizzly bears, so standard food-storage precautions are necessary. There are 12 single-family campsites in total: nine of those can accommodate both RVs and tents while three are tent-only. Each site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring; accessible vault toilets and a hand-pumped drinking water source are on site. The first vehicle is included in the basic fee; if your site will take a second vehicle, an extra $10 is charged and collected at the campground. Firewood bundles are available from the campground host, and trash may be deposited at receptacles at nearby Greenough Lake Campground. For facility-specific questions call (928) 537-8888. If you make a reservation through recreation.gov, be aware refund requests are charged a $10 processing fee (this fee and the non-refundable reservation fee are retained by the reservation contractor). Recreation here is rooted in the creek, nearby lakes and direct access to the Beartooth Wilderness. The Main Fork of Rock Creek and 5-acre Greenough Lake about a half-mile away are home to rainbow trout and are the primary spots for fishing; Greenough Lake also permits canoeing and kayaking. Trailheads for Glacier Lake, Hellroaring and Lake Fork provide routes into the Beartooth Wilderness, while the Parkside National Recreation Trail in the area sees hikers and mountain bikers. Off-road vehicles can use Hellroaring Road, and the corridor generally supports auto touring, picnicking, wildlife viewing and other Forest activities such as horseback riding and boating across the broader Custer Gallatin National Forest. Red Lodge, with dining, shops and seasonal events, is the nearest town, and the Beartooth Highway one of the highest elevation roads in the Northern Rockies threads from Red Lodge toward Cooke City and the northeast entrance to Yellowstone about 55 miles away via the Beartooth route.
