About

Basin Campground sits about 7 miles west of Red Lodge on West Fork Rock Creek Road (Forest Road 2071); the pavement continues all the way to the campground entrance, making it straightforward to reach in a car or RV. The site sits on the banks of the West Fork of Rock Creek in a landscape that was opened up by the Cascade Fire in 2008 and now supports broad views and abundant wildflowers in season. There are 29 campsites total each designed to accommodate both RVs and tents with medium-length back-in spurs, a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill at every site. Three sites are accessible, and the campground provides accessible vault toilets and drinking water; Wild Bill Lake, a short distance away, also has an accessible fishing dock. Firewood bundles can be purchased from the campground host. Recreation here centers on water and trail access: anglers fish the West Fork and Wild Bill Lake (kayaks and canoes are allowed on the lake), while the Basin Lakes Trailhead is directly across the road and provides routes (Silver Run Plateau, West Fork and Timberline Lakes Trails) into the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness. Mountain bikers use Ingles Creek Trail and the Silver Run loop system, and biking is permitted on the Basin Lakes Trail. The town of Red Lodge with restaurants, galleries, shops and a summer calendar of events is the nearest service center, and the drive up the Beartooth Highway is a popular day trip for sweeping high-country views. The first vehicle is included in the basic fee; a second vehicle, if your site can accommodate it, is charged $10 and collected at the campground. If you plan to reserve online, note that refund requests through recreation.gov incur a $10 processing fee retained by the reservation contractor and reservation fees are non-refundable; for facility-specific questions call (928) 537-8888.
