Greenough Lake Campground sits along Rock Creek less than a quarter mile from its namesake lake, about 12 miles south of Red Lodge and just off the Beartooth Highway. The site is set beneath the Beartooth Range in a mixed aspen and pine stand, where deer, elk and even grizzly bears inhabit the surrounding hillsides. There are 18 campsites total, and each site accommodates both tents and RVs and comes with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring; two sites are designed for accessibility. The campground provides accessible vault toilets and a hand-pumped drinking-water source, and firewood bundles can be purchased from the campground host. For facility-specific questions call (928) 537-8888. Outdoor opportunities concentrate on the lake and nearby trailheads. Greenough Lake is suitable for canoeing and kayaking and is stocked with rainbow trout, while the Main Fork of Rock Creek is another favored stream for anglers. Hikers and mountain bikers can use the Parkside National Recreation Trail, and Hellroaring and Lake Fork trailheads give access into the Beartooth Wilderness; Hellroaring Road is open to off-road vehicles. Practical notes: the first vehicle is included in the basic camping fee; a second vehicle (if your site can accommodate it) is charged an additional $10, collected at the campground. Reservations made through recreation.gov are subject to a $10 processing fee on refunds (retained by the reservation contractor) and the non-refundable reservation fee is not returned by the campground concessionaire. The Beartooth Highway the highest elevation highway in the Northern Rockies and a route to Yellowstone's northeast entrance 55 miles away runs nearby, and the town of Red Lodge offers supplies, dining, and seasonal events within easy reach.
