Perched on a bluff above Arkabutla Dam, the South Abutment Day Use Area gives you a broad view of the Coldwater River as it spills into Arkabutla Lake and the steady sailboats that favor these open waters. The site sits on the top of the hill between the South Abutment Campgrounds and the west side of the dam, so you get the sense of being close to the locks and spillway without being down on the boat ramps. Facilities are straightforward and family-friendly: two pavilions and two restrooms, a playground for kids, plenty of picnic tables and grills scattered across the hilltop, and ample parking for day visitors. Water is nearby but there are no designated swimming areas; if you do go in, PFDs are required to be worn while swimming. Anglers and sailors will notice why Arkabutla is popular the lake is known for large crappie and offers some of the best sailing conditions east of the Mississippi. Though South Abutment is primarily a day-use park, the official site inventory lists a single campsite 1 total campsite that accommodates both RVs and tents so overnight options at this exact spot are extremely limited. A fee of $75.00 applies, and cancellations may be made up until the day before the day of reservation. If you need overnight facilities, the broader Arkabutla Lake area (about 30 minutes south of Memphis) offers additional options: three Class A campgrounds with electric, water, and sewer hookups and three primitive campgrounds for tent-only stays. Beyond picnicking and playground time at the day-use area, the wider park supports a wide range of activities boating and water sports, fishing, hiking and biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing and a specialized playground/sport site so it's easy to combine a lakeside afternoon here with an overnight stay nearby.
