Outlet Channel Day Use sits on the lower side of Arkabutla Dam along the Coldwater River in the rolling hills of northwest Mississippi, a short drive from Memphis. The riverfront pavilion and group shelter sit among shady stands of oak, hickory, beech, sweetgum and birch, and the outlet channel itself is a favored spot for crappie anglers and shore fishing. The larger Arkabutla Lake project spreads out around this point, offering strong sailing and a wide range of boating and water-sports opportunities on open water, plus thousands of anglers pursuing largemouth bass, bream, catfish and notably large crappie. Trails link the area to the Coldwater River Nature Trail System and the nearby Swinging Bridge Nature Trail, both of which include interpretive sections about the former river landscape and local wildlife; across the lake region, roughly 30,000 acres of managed public lands provide hunting habitat for whitetail deer, wild turkey, quail and waterfowl. The day-use area includes a small tent camping area and a single site that is configured to serve both RV and tent campers in the campground inventory this is recorded as one total campsite (1 both RV sites & tent sites). Families will find a newly constructed playground, individual picnic sites and a group picnic shelter, plus direct fishing access at the outlet channel and trailheads for hiking and biking. A fee of $75 is posted for use of the site; because reservation rules, seasonal schedules and vehicle/access restrictions are not included here, plan to contact the Arkabutla Lake office or Corps of Engineers recreation staff before you go to confirm availability, make reservations if required, and get current information on closures or special regulations.
