South Abutment Recreation Area sits on the south side of Arkabutla Dam on the Coldwater River, in the rolling wooded hills of northwest Mississippi just a short drive from Memphis. The campground has 75 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, each with electric hookups, and the waterfront setting gives quick access to the lake where sailing is notably strong and anglers chase largemouth bass, bream, catfish and the large crappie the lake is known for. Trees around the loops oak, hickory, beech, sweet gum and birch shade sites and create a quiet, wooded feel despite the proximity to the dam; you can launch a boat or head out on foot to nearby trails within minutes. The park supports a wide range of activities: boating and water sports on the lake, shore and boat-fishing, hiking on the Coldwater River Nature Trail System and the interpretive Swinging Bridge Nature Trail, biking, horseback riding in nearby areas, picnicking, playground recreation and wildlife viewing in the larger public lands around Arkabutla. Facilities at South Abutment are oriented toward comfortable, year-round camping: flush toilets, showers, drinking water and one group day-use shelter serve the 75 family sites. There's also a free, 18-hole public disc golf course (Lost Indian Spring) below the dam and the Senatobia Wetlands educational area is roughly a 30-minute drive for birdwatching and displays. A standard camping fee of $20 applies, and the reservation policy includes a $10 fee to cancel or to change sites or dates once a reservation is made; cancellations made the day before, or up to the day after, your arrival are charged the first night's use fee. No-shows incur a $20 fee plus the first night's use; if your reservation is for a single night and you have already been charged the first night's use fee, the $10 service fee does not apply. To reach the area from I-55, use the Hernando exit and follow Scenic Route 304 toward the main dam look for signs into the recreation area and you'll find the campground just south of the dam.
