Leech Lake Recreation Area sits on the Leech Lake River inside the Chippewa National Forest at the small riverside community of Federal Dam, in north-central Minnesota. The campground serves as a gateway to Portage Bay on Leech Lake, a deep, irregular shoreline system that supports 316 miles of shoreline and 14 natural lakes; anglers come here for perch, walleye and musky, plus bass and northern pike, and boaters and paddlers will find immediate access to open water from on-site ramps and overnight mooring. Miles of forested trails thread through stands of elm, ash, maple, basswood, birch, aspen and pine and connect with longer routes such as the Soo Line, Heartland and North Country National Scenic Trails, so it's easy to alternate a lake morning with a multi-mile hike. Wildlife is common around camp loons often call from the bay and the water-based recreation options (boating, canoeing, fishing and general water sports) are the campground's primary draw. The campground has a total of 78 sites, arranged to accommodate different needs: 69 sites are set up for both RVs and tents, four are RV-only, and five are tent-only, so groups can typically find the configuration they need without sacrificing a wooded spot. Facilities on-site include flush toilets and showers, drinking water, laundry, a dump station, boat ramps and overnight boat mooring; there's a group day-use picnic shelter with electricity plus two smaller picnic shelters, playground areas for kids, and a cluster of courts and activity spaces basketball, volleyball, badminton, shuffleboard and horseshoe pits for dry-land recreation. Reservations may be canceled online or by phone; a $10 service fee is withheld from refunds for cancellations made before arrival, and cancellations the day before or the day of arrival incur the $10 fee and forfeiture of the first night's fee (not to exceed the total paid). One-night reservations forfeits the entire payment if cancelled, and changing dates outside the original reservation window carries a $10 change fee.
