Winnie Dam Campground sits on the shores of Winnibigoshish Lake within the Chippewa National Forest, a broad, forested lake country where red pines and mixed hardwoods meet more than 141 miles of shoreline on this roughly 67,000-acre lake. Anglers come here for walleye, perch and musky Lake Winnie is regarded as one of Minnesota's stronger fisheries and boating is a major draw across the lake's wide bays. A network of hiking and biking trails weaves through the surrounding forest and hunting areas lie beyond the day-use zone; wildlife is abundant, from nesting bald eagles scanning the water to porcupines, black bears and small mammals in the understory. In season you'll also find wild blackberries, raspberries and blueberries on the forest floor, and the area supports water sports in summer and winter-season recreation noted by the park's activity listings. The campground itself (pronounced "win-uh-big-osh-ish") provides 21 campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents, each with electric hookups, plus the basic comforts needed for multi-day stays: showers, flush and pit toilets, drinking water, a dump station, a boat ramp, a picnic shelter and a playground. These facilities make the site a practical base for boating, fishing, picnicking and other water sports, and the playground and picnic shelter are handy for families. Winnie Dam is reached from Deer River via Highway 2 west and Highway 46, then onto Itasca County Road 9 roughly a 15-mile drive through the Chippewa National Forest and you should check the U.S. Forest Service or the Mississippi River Headwaters office for current fees, reservation policies, seasonal opening dates and any access restrictions before you go.
