“Nice campground. Most sites are level. ”
“Great location, rocky drop-off down to water but good spot to launch a kayak or canoe. Took 6” on the low side to level our camper. Not a lot of afternoon shade. Nice facility, restroom was stocked and clean. ”
“Only wanted Friday night & had to book 2 nights…also the most unlevel site I’ve ever stayed in”

Santa Fe Trail Campground sits on the western shore of Council Grove Lake amid the rolling grasslands of the Flint Hills, a remaining swath of North America's tallgrass prairie. The lake itself was formed by a dam completed in 1964 and stretches across 3,310 acres of water and nearly 2,700 acres of adjacent hunting and public use land. The campground is a short drive northwest of the town of Council Grove about two miles from the town's National Historic District, where seven Santa Fe Trail sites and a marker for the Osage treaty recall the area's role in early westward travel and it lies roughly 20 miles north of the National Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. Trails follow the shoreline and climb gentle hills; Pioneer Nature Trail is singled out for good wildlife viewing and seasonal wildflowers. From the campground you can also link up with the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway for longer drives through tallgrass country or reach the Konza Prairie Preserve further north. The campground offers 33 reservable campsites: 32 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and one walk-in tent-only site, plus a group camping area that can host up to 75 people. Practical comforts include electric hookups and flush toilets, along with shady, open grassy spots suited to yard games; a boat ramp located inside the campground gives direct access for boating and water sports on Council Grove Lake. Anglers will find crappie and catfish in abundance and the lake was the first in Kansas to be stocked with saugeye; hunting for quail, prairie chicken, wild turkey and deer occurs on the surrounding public lands. The broader recreation area supports picnicking, a playground and specialized sport sites, hiking, off-highway vehicle use in designated areas, and wildlife viewing. Campsites are reservable through the park system check the official park reservation site or call the office for current fees, seasonal opening dates, and any access rules before you go. To reach the campground from I-70, head south on Highway 177 toward Council Grove and follow the lake/dam access roads to City Lake Road and the campground entrance.
