Richey Cove Campground sits along the western shore of Council Grove Lake, a 3,310-acre reservoir tucked into the rolling grasslands of the Flint Hills. The lake was formed by a dam completed in 1964 and the surrounding landscape still shows large stretches of the region's remaining tallgrass prairie. From I-70 you head south on Highway 177 for about 30 miles; the entrance to Richey Cove is on the west side of the highway at the dam road, and the town of Council Grove home to seven Santa Fe National Historic Trail sites and a marker for the Osage treaty site is only a couple of miles away. The campground itself offers 39 reservable campsites, all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, plus a group camping area that can take up to 40 guests. Sites have electric hookups and the loop is served by flush toilets and other modern amenities; you'll find plenty of shade along with open grassy areas for games and relaxation, while picnic facilities and a playground are part of the broader recreation area around the lake. Outdoor opportunities at Richey Cove are centered on the water and the prairie beyond. A boat ramp within the campground makes boating and water sports straightforward, and anglers will find crappie and catfish common here Council Grove was also the first lake in Kansas stocked with saugeye. Trails follow the shoreline and thread into nearby forested pockets, with the Pioneer Nature Trail often singled out for wildlife, wildflowers and varied scenery. Hunters use nearly 2,700 acres of public hunting land around the lake for quail, prairie chicken, wild turkey and deer, and the campground forms a handy base for wildlife viewing and off-highway vehicle riding as well. Richey Cove is also a practical stop on drives through the Flint Hills: the park lies roughly 20 miles north of the National Tallgrass Prairie Preserve and about 30 miles south of the Konza Prairie Preserve, so you can combine lake recreation with a broader exploration of the region's remaining tallgrass ecosystems.
