Canning Creek Cove sits on the western shore of 3,310-acre Council Grove Lake in the rolling grasslands of the Flint Hills, where patches of tallgrass prairie give way to oak woods and a ribbon of shoreline. The lake itself was formed by a dam built in 1964 and is surrounded by nearly 2,700 acres of public hunting land, so mornings and evenings often bring visible wildlife deer, wild turkey, quail and even prairie chicken in season along with plenty of songbirds and spring wildflowers on the Pioneer Nature Trail. Council Grove town, about two miles southeast, preserves several Santa Fe National Historic Trail sites and serves as a convenient base for exploring the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway; the National Tallgrass Prairie Preserve lies roughly 20 miles to the north and the Konza Prairie Preserve about 30 miles to the south, making the campground a good stop for prairie-focused day trips. The campground accommodates a variety of overnight styles: the official count is 45 sites in all, with 43 sites set up for both RVs and tents and 2 tent-only sites, and the park also lists three reservable group sites (approximately 40, 75 and 100 people) for larger gatherings. Practical facilities at Canning Creek include electric hookups, flush toilets, shaded loops and open grassy areas for games; two boat ramps are located inside the campground, so launching for boating, water sports and fishing is straightforward. Anglers will find crappie and catfish common and Council Grove was the first Kansas lake stocked with saugeye. Trails follow the lakeshore and lead into the woods for hiking and wildlife viewing, and the surrounding public lands provide hunting and off-highway vehicle opportunities. Sites are reservable check the park's reservation system or ranger office for current fees, seasonal availability and any rules before you go and the campground is reached from Highway 177 south of I-70, with the entrance off City Lake Road near the dam.
